Bedroom Inspiration

I am at it again working on the styling of another room, this time our guest room is getting a makeover to coordinate with the guest bath.  If you follow me you know our guest bath was recently given a little facelift, going from bright colors to black and white with pops of blue on a tan/sand background. The guest bedroom color scheme is going from blues and greens to black, white and tan with an icy blue background to make everything pop; a very sharp, clean look.  Here are some of the photos which originally inspired both the guest bath and bedroom. Can you guess which elements in each room I was drawn to?

As you can see in the photos each room is crisp, sharp and coordinates very well together with some of the elements in each photo already in my design closet. But after evaluating the room and some of the furniture and other accessories in my stash I was not happy with the somewhat stark feeling of the room. True it did mirror the guest bath and my studio but I was not sure our guests would appreciate the lack of warmth and comfort.

Lately I have been very drawn to Shabby Chic, French and European design, which is not my usual style but never the less very appealing in its old world warmth and architectural design.  I was itching to give it a try, why not in a room which pretty much sits alone at one end of the house on the top floor? The funny thing is I made several Paris inspired pillows, from some fabric a reader sent to me last year, which were just sitting in my design stash waiting for a home. Even with all the photos, research and design boards done the pillow became my jumping off point instead.  It just goes to show, you never know which way a project is going to go, sometimes you just have to let it evolve naturally and see where it winds up.

Thanks for letting me share the beginning stages of my newest styling project with you.  I have a long way to go to get the room where I want it; follow along with me as I progress with lots of money saving DIY projects designed to enhance that Shabby/French/Paris feeling. This project is not going to be a quick one because I believe it will be evolving for quite a while so check in often to see what I am up to.
See you soon.

2014 Color Forecast

Hello everyone, Happy New Year!  I am happy to be back on my original blog site doing what I set out to do when I first started my blog in 2011.  My original intent was to share my creative life with other like minded people who love to read about living a similar lifestyle to their own and getting inspired to try new things via my projects and experiences. Last year I got a wild hair and thought I needed to split up my blog posts so that only sewing projects would be featured on this blog page and all the rest of my projects should be on a different blog page.  Not the best idea I ever had, it was just way too difficult to split them up and find time to write for two separate blogs, total failure! Oh well, live and learn!  Time to move on and go back to doing what I love best which is being my all around creative self and writing about it as I go along on one blog page.  I may still post one of my painting projects on the other blog page from time to time but I will let you know when that happens, the rest of the time everything else will be right here where it belongs.

Buttons, Bows & Bling is back and hopefully much improved, with that being said I want to share the new Pantone Color Forecast for 2014.  Pantone is the industry leader in color forecasting for all avenues of design and fashion, setting the stage for color ways through every industry. And now…

Here it is…. Pantone’s Color of the Year 2014 is…… (Drum roll please!)… Radiant Orchid; which is an enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones blooming with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination. Radiant Orchid is an expressive and embracing purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm and captivating harmony which emanates great joy, love and health.

Radiant Orchid is already sweeping straight across all industries with the production and release of products to professionals and retail consumers. Here are just a few examples of how Radiant Orchid is already being shown.

A wide variety of textile prints, fabrics and threads.

Fashions and accessories

Cosmetics

Paper textiles

Paints for every surface

Furniture, upholstery and accessories

Last but not least, interior design.

As you can see for yourself Radiant Orchid has touched just about every industry and is very widespread with possibly the exception of the auto industry, but don’t quote me on that, you just never know what they are going to do next.
For myself, I love every shade of lavender and purple and Radiant Orchid is no exception, I am sure I will be found wearing the darker purples during the rest of the winter months and the lighter shades right into spring and summer.  However, I do not think it will become part of my home décor or painting projects unless I am creating something for one of my granddaughters, time will tell and I will share it with you if I do use it in a project.  For those of you who sew, paint or design for a living this is a good heads up as to how color is trending throughout 2014.

Although Radiant Orchid is the color of the year it is not the only color trending for this coming spring; soft pastels paired with vivid brights will create new looks and color combinations that refresh and revive everyday fashions.  I will share those with you in a future post so you can be right on top of the current trends and maybe even ahead of the game.

Thanks for letting me share the color of the year; it was great fun putting it together for you. Come along with me as I share all my creative adventures and inspire you to step out of your comfort zones and try some new things this year.  I wish all of you a very Happy, Productive and Creative New Year!!!
See you soon.

Holiday Sparkle

Holiday Sparkle -  How to get it

The holidays are fast approaching; it is time to make your home a place that sparkles with light and glamour.  Even if you don’t traditionally celebrate or decorate for the holidays you can still give your home a little lift with some elegance and a bit of sparkle.  Some of us go all out decorating the tree, stairway, fireplace and every nook and cranny we can find, at least that’s what I usually do when I have the time and energy.  But for those who live alone, don’t have family who come to visit or who don’t celebrate the holidays, it is business as usual, the same old surroundings day after day.  Even if the holidays aren’t your thing you can still add a bit of bling to help bring some new light to your daily surroundings and have some fun while doing it.

You don’t have to go all out; you can just make a few simple changes to give things a fresh, new look.  One of my favorite ways to help perk things up is to set my dinning room table.  Several times a year I change up my table, since we only use it when the whole family is home for a visit or we want to have a romantic dinner for two.  You could do the same with your dinner table, if you don’t have little ones, a great trick for all of you empty nester's.  I don’t put out plates, silverware and glasses, just all the pretty things around them.

Here is a list of some of the items I use to change up my table whenever I want a new look or feel in the room.

I have several different colors of plate chargers; gold and copper.  I purchased a variety of tablecloths; brown, red, olive green, copper and cream, pretty basic colors to go with the chargers.  I eventually bought napkins, place mats and table runners in coordinating colors as well as some napkin rings.  I didn’t purchase it all at once, it took me some time, I kept in mind the colors I already had whenever I saw a clearance sale, great time to stock up and Target is wonderful for that.  I had a little 3x5 card in my purse with all the items listed I already had and what I wanted to look for.  Whenever I couldn’t find what I wanted, I made it myself, to fill in the gaps; napkins, place mats and table runners are quick and easy to make.  These are the foundation pieces necessary for dressing your tabletops.

For several options, start with two table linen colors which are complimentary so you can mix and match; like brown and gold or brown and copper, red and cream or green and cream.  Buy one set of everything in each color then mix and match creating all kinds of elegant tabletops making your whole room feel like new each time you make a change.

Now for the elegance and sparkle; simply add a pretty charger in gold or silver and a couple of different napkin rings, one for everyday use and one with some bling.  You can really get a lot of different looks with just a couple of changes.

This simple brown napkin takes on an elegant look when placed on a gold charger with a sparkling napkin ring.

Add a pretty beaded napkin ring and place it on a brown place mat for a whole new look.

A golden jeweled napkin ring on a copper charger brings in fall elegance.

The brown napkin with a wooden napkin ring, on a copper charger, placed on a brown place mat sets the table for Thanksgiving.

Put the sparkle and elegance in your daily decorating by adding a few pretty pieces to your everyday dinner table or special occasion dinning room.  Make everyday a special day.

Thanks for letting me share just a few of my tabletop decorating ideas.  Look for part two of Holiday Sparkle; I will be sharing how to add some more sparkle and glitz to your holiday dinners and parties.  Let’s glam it up together.  See you very soon.

Contain That Clutter Part 2

Contain That Clutter Part 2

In part 1, I talked about editing (see past post), Today’s post is about how to organize all those small and large goodies (for me it is sewing notions) using unusual containers.  You are probably thinking here we go again; I have to spend more money on storage boxes, bags and whatever else is out there.  True you may want to do just that but if you are thinking of going a little bit green and leaving a little less garbage in the landfills, then you might find my ideas useful.  Keep in mind I use all these items at my work stations.  I have a working studio with several projects going at once so I have to be able to find things quickly; little stations around the room help me to know where to look for an item without wasting time. My storage solutions do just that, some you will know about others will be new to you. Remember some of this is out of the box thinking.

For my colorful buttons, which I use in my children’s line, I put them into a couple of different kinds of containers.

For the larger flower buttons; I put them into glass bottles which held Starbucks coffee, I soaked off the labels in very hot water so I could see each button color (love the lids).

For medium and miniature buttons; I used little condiment containers we got   with our take-out soup order.  They all had lids on them which keep those pesky little buttons from escaping and rolling around on the floor.

My specialty, wide ribbons and larger buttons are kept in clear hair spray can tops.  They are deep and clear so I can see the colors and my ribbons don’t end up a wrinkled mess.

All of these items sit on a very old acrylic tray my Mom used at cocktail parties in the 60’s. Totally a re-purposed item, it now serves notions.

A couple of other containers I use to sort and contain buttons are clear glass soup jars, vintage Planters Peanut jars, nut jars from a hotel mini-bar, (paid a hefty price for those nuts) and plastic containers from Kentucky Fried Chicken which hold the side orders.  They are semi clear with snap on red tops.

To store small jewelry findings, seed beads and other small embellishments I use sample glass jars I get from the make-up counter at the department stores.

My bias tape, elastic and piping all go into a fabric covered box which coordinates with my studio colors (black, white & turquoise).

Some of my threads are stored in a large glass cookie jar and a clear plastic mayonnaise jar with a cute avocado green lid.

Extra scissors, a flashlight, nail file and other goodies are stored in a mercury glass flower vase (a gift from my sister).

Glass jars of every kind, glass candle holders and little metal pails hold colored pencils; colored pens, paint brushes, stencil brushes, decorative cutting scissors, paperclips, rubber bands and so much more.  I primarily use glass for easy viewing but you can use any plastic food jars or take out containers you come across.  Pre-made salad containers usually have great shapes and colors and are pretty interesting to look at.

When you are looking for fun containers for storage ask yourself this:  What can I use this for or what can I put in this?  Look at everything you are going to throw out; try to see it in a new and creative light.

Of coarse you can purchase great looking containers just about everywhere, but remember half the fun is looking at things in a new and creative way and using them to make your creative world a little bit more organized.  Oh and don’t forget all the money you could be saving to buy more goodies.

Look for Part 3 of Contain That Clutter; we will be looking at storage for your larger supplies.  See you soon,

A New Blogger

Hello to everyone viewing this blog for the first time.  I am new to blogging and this site is still under construction as I figure out all the ins and outs of posting the written word and hopefully beautiful photographs to go with it. I am neither a writer nor photographer but I am a seamstress/artist and I have lots to share with you. Please hang in there with me as I go through this process with my graphic designer, A Jewel’d Design, while we work out the bugs. Hopefully the process will be a quick one.  Thanks for visiting our site, look for my first post shortly.
